BUDDY COACHING & COMMUNICATION SKILLS
   
INTRODUCTION :
 

A Buddy System uses peers’ influence between a new hire (or a junior worker) with a senior co-worker to accelerate the productivity of new hire, enhance quality and safety at workplace and enhance job satisfaction.  Such a system helps build immediate personal connection between the new employee and the organization.  In addition, a new employee or junior worker who is make to feel part of the workgroup gains more confidence and is likely to become more productive faster.  It contributes to the overall companywide employment retention program.

A successful buddy candidate is a seasoned employee who has an understanding of organizational practices, culture, processes, communication channels and systems.  A buddy should be a friendly volunteer with exemplary personal performance standards, have a positive attitude and communicates well.  However, these buddy skills doesn't comes naturally with experience.  It needs to be acquired. Senior employees who are carefully trained will accelerate the organization's Buddy System and achieve greater success for the organization.

This course is designed to coach & train senior employees on how to be a successful Buddy to newcomer peers.  It provides the foundation: basic principles, soft-skills, processes with follow-through, key actions and practices for to increase the competency level of a Buddy.  This course will equip the participants with  essential human interaction skills such as rapport-building, communicating effectively, coaching and training newcomer employees with their on-job-training and follow-ups

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe what an effective Buddy System is; its importance and benefits to the employees and organization
  • List the role and responsibilities of a Buddy
  • Use basic human rapport building skills and discover why others want to work with Buddy?
  • Practice Attentive Listening skills for correct interpretation
  • Ask questions and use assertive communication appropriately
  • Use the 'L.E.A.P' Principle and Key Actions to re-direct Difficult buddy towards problem-solving at the workplace
  • Foster teamwork and use the On-The-Job Training (OJT) technique to systematically train buddy during OJT.

Human Relation Skills

  • Why do others want to work with us?
  • What is Emotional Bank Account (E.B.A)? How to deposit EBA?
  • Basic Principles in building rapport with others:
    - Focus on issue, situation and behavior, not Personality
    - Maintain the self-esteem and self-confident of others
    - Maintain good relationship with others by depositing into the EBA

Enhancing Communication Skills

  • Acknowledging others by giving attention
  • Listen to understand. Use Attentive Listening technique
  • Check for understanding and reactions
  • Use paraphrasing technique
  • Use correct questioning technique
  • Give clear and specific instructions
  • Give constructive feedback

Basic Coaching Skills

  • What is stress? Where do stress comes from?
  • Why people can be difficult? What should you do?
  • Use L.E.A.P principles in facing difficult buddy:
    - L : Listen attentively
    - E : Emphatize
    - A : Ask appropriate questions, not advise
    - P : (engage in ) Problem-Solving mode

  • How to demonstrate teamwork.
  • On-The-Job Training (OJT) process:
    - Tell
